One of the most amazing men. Wyclif was a prodigious intellect, a fearless leader, an inspiring model and a razor sharp thinker. He was a patriot, a passionately devout believer in the bible and gospel, a revolutionary firebrand, a statesman, a scholar, and a fascinating man.
I am, at present, looking for a good biography.
He wrote on philosophy, theology, politics, economics, and, interestingly enough, cosmology.
You often hear of Galileo and his trial by the church.... which was in reality a trial by the consensus of scientists of his day. What you DON'T hear is that John Wyclif posited the same doctrine two centuries before, using less extensive data.
Wycliffe's doctrine of atoms
connects itself with the doctrine of the composition of
time from real moments. He denied "interspaces" based on the idea that all points are part of a continuum. The the unity of the cosmos is an extension of the theological point that all individual points ("atoms") are a part of the bodies which they fill. He combined this idea with the observation of the circular motion of the heavens and deduced the spherical form of the universe.
